Joe's Place B&B – Madalena , Pico , Azoren ,Portugal
Our guest house is situated in a quiet neighbourhood, at a 10 minutes walk from the center of Madalena.
There is a supermarket 600 meters near to our house, and in the town of
Madalena you will find several restaurants and bars.
Pico is the
second largest island of the Azores Archipelago with a surface area of
448 km² and a population of some 15,000 inhabitants. It is situated in
the central group at a distance of 7 km from Faial and 18 km from São
Jorge, its nearest neighbours.
The island is home to the Pico, the highest mountain in Portugal which
reaches an altitude of 2351 meters.This majestic extinct volcano,
classified in 1972 as Natural Reserve, is a prominent and consistent
element in the island’s landscape.
Using the network of roads which pass through the interior of the
island, along the mountainside and the coastline, Pico offers a
landscape of undescribable beauty.
Besides the whales and dolphins, for which the area is famous, you will
discover a treasure of herbs and plants, some endemic, others migrated
from other parts of the world.
If you're lucky, you can spot some beautiful birds, vagrant or passing through, that come from America, Africa and Europe.
The island of Pico is divided into three municipalities, “Madalena”,
“São Roque”, and “Lajes”. Similar to the other islands the value of its’
architectonic patrimony is found in the churches and chapels of the
different parishes.
The Azoren climate is temperate oceanic. It is mainly regulated by a
branch of the Gulf Stream and by a high pressure zone called the "Azores
anticyclone". Over the year temperatures vary between 13°C and 27°C and
humidity in the air can be rather high. Rainfall peaks during the time
from October to January. But even if you come in another period, you can
have the four seasons in one single day.
Since the soil merely consists of vulcanic rock, it might be a good idea
to bring a solid pair of shoes if you plan to explore the inland
country or the mountain or to visit the caves.
Also keep this soil in mind if you use the natural swimming pools along the coast .
