't Staaksken – Assenede
A Flemish cottage in the heart of the Meetjesland Creek area
Where time stands still……………
The willow-lined canals, lush green pastures and extensive soft, sandy dunes of Flanders need no introduction ; their beauty has been captured for centuries by some of the world's greatest artists. The Meetjesland, however is known only to a discerning few, yet it has much to offer anyone seeking peace and quiet.
Its one of those rare corners of Western Europe where time has virtually stood still and man has barely changed the face of nature.
Today its a land of creeks and polders, tall fields, « sleeping » dikes and old smugglers routes in the north and woodlands in the south which contain beautiful castles and castle farms.
The region is ideal for cycling, walking, relaxing and fishing and of course to discover the historical towns of Ghent , Hulst ( NL) 17 km - Bruges, Antwerp, Damme, Middelburg (NL) 40 km - Brussels, Oudenaarde 65 km
The Dutch North-sea Coast of Breskens, Knokke and Vlissingen is a 30 minute drive.
The NON SMOKING charming Holiday Cottage ' T Staaksken ( 220 m2) is situated atop an old dike, 2 kilometers from the gastronomic village of Assenede. The village is one of the oldest villages in Flanders en enjoys the distinction of having many restaurants of international repute
The little Dutch historical town Sas van Gent with his old harbour is only 1 km away.

The cottage is ok. Considering that we paid almost 1,000 EUR for one week, we expected much more. The owner tried to be very friendly by providing sightseeing tips. The hostess Margaret, however, was not friendly at all. She locked one of the bedrooms claiming that we did not specify during the booking that we need all three of them. When I tried to argue that we would need that room too, she said that we could take our money back and go somewhere else (since we were travelling with a 8-month daughter, we were not flexible enough to leave at once and search for another place). It seems the place is twice smaller than announced 220 square meters. I expected to see 6 rooms as advertised but there were only 3 bedrooms (one initially closed) and a living room. Most likely they counted a bathroom and a storage room as normal rooms. I also failed to see why it is a 4-star cottage. The place looks rather old (but not antique) and dark. The owners live next door and share with you the pond (which was one of the reasons I chose this cottage). The view on the pond is very beautiful, although there are mosquitoes around. One more thing which needs to be mentioned is that you will need to provide the detailed information about yourself and every other guest to the owner of the house (former policeman) before you check in. This includes everyone's address, dates of birth, and occupations (!). When asked why he needed all this information, he said that nobody complained and just provided it during the last 25 years. Overall, I think this place would fit better the needs of pensioners rather than young travelers or families.
